Marmontel (1723-1799), peu connu de nos jours, remporta un immense succes avec ses romans (Belisaire, Les Incas) et ses Contes Moraux. Il est aussi l'auteur de nombreux articles de theorie d'art et de litterature recueillis dans l'Encyclopedie de Diderot. D'origine tres modeste, Marmontel a connu une fulgurante ascension sociale. Appele a Paris par Voltaire, il devient directeur du Mercure de France, historiographe de France et secretaire perpetuel de l'Academie Francaise. Auteur de nombreuses tragedies et comedies musicales, il joue un role de premier plan dans la guerre des deux musiques qui eclate avec l'arrivee en France du compositeur italien Piccini. Ses textes sont lus partout et aussitot traduits. Avec les philosophes du siecle des Lumieres, Marmontel a lutte contre l'imperialisme et pour la liberte de conscience. Voltairien convaincu, il a adopte un style modere qui lui a assure un tres large auditoire, en Europe et meme aux Etats-Unis.
