Renoir's films relect a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, which are the result of his choreographed staging and masterful camera work. Grand Illusion (1937) won the New York Film Critics Award for Best Foreign Film. In 1975 Jean Renoir was recognised with a special Academy Award for his genius as a filmmaker.
