Das Modell der Mannheimer Kunsterziehungsbewegung wird durch Fritz Wichert, den ersten Leiter der Mannheimer Kunsthalle 1909-1923, geprägt. Der freie Bund ist ein frühes Beispiel konsequenter Vermittlungstätigkeit und Ausstellungsdidaktik im Kunstmuseum. Die Arbeit analysiert die geistesgeschichtlichen Grundlagen des Freien Bundes und beschreibt seine überregionale Ausstrahlungskraft.
