Im Vorwort zur ersten Auflage heißt es: ""Mitten durch Las Vegas führt die Nationalstraße 91, das Urbild des Geschäfts-Strip, die reinste und intensivste Verwirklichung dieses Phänomens. Wir sind der Meinung, dass eine sorgfältige Bestandsaufnahme und Analyse seiner physischen Formen für die Stadtplaner und Architekten heute genauso wichtig ist wie vormals das Studium der Werke des mittelalterlichen Europa, des antiken Rom und Griechenlands für die früheren Generationen. Die Studie kann vielleicht dazu beitragen, den neuen Typus städtischer Formen näher zu bestimmen, der sich gegenwärtig in Amerika und Europa herausbildet und der sich grundlegend von allem unterscheidet, was wir bisher gekannt haben.""
