Es hat sich zu einer Institution zur Dokumentation von und zur Aufklärung über Recht und Rechtswirklichkeit in Gefängnissen entwickelt. Fundamental für die Untersuchungen zum Rechtsschutz im Gefängnis, aber auch für die wissenschaftliche und rechtspolitische Arbeit des Strafvollzugsarchivs ist die über Jahrzehnte andauernde Korrespondenz mit Gefangenen, über die hier ebenfalls berichtet wird. Der Autor: Dr. Johannes Feest war Professor (i.R.) für Strafverfolgung, Strafvollzug, Strafrecht an der  Universität Bremen. Er ist Vorsitzender des Vereins Strafvollzugsarchiv e.V.
