Linné hatte vor allem mit seinem System der Pflanzen bleibenden Erfolg. Seine geniale Idee war es, die Pflanzensystematik auf die Fortpflanzungsweise der Pflanzen zu gründen. Er bildete 24 Klassen, geordnet nach Anzahl und Anordnung der Staubgefäße und Griffel in der Blüte. Linnés besondere Leistung bestand in der erstmals durchgängig angewandten ""binären Nomenklatur."" Jede Pflanzenart wurde von ihm mit nur zwei lateinischen Termini, einem für die Gattung und einem für die Art, eindeutig gekennzeichnet. Innerhalb weniger Jahrzehnte setzte sich Linnés System wegen seiner Einfachheit und Klarheit in der naturkundlichen Fachwelt durch.
