Portuguese as a contrastive reference brings together a set of studies that analyze discourse markers of European Portuguese in comparison with other languages. The analysis is based on corpora, translations and other relevant linguistic resources. The works included in this volume show the crucial importance of the contrastive perspective in the analysis of discourse markers, for translation, teaching foreign languages and linguistic description in general. The relevance of the book comes from placing Portuguese discourse markers as the center of reflection and contrastive analysis. We highlight the variety of theoretical points of view, of discourses in which the markers are analyzed, of languages whose markers are compared with those of European Portuguese.
