Wer erzählt die Metamorphosen? Gibt es nur einen Erzähler? Muss man überhaupt zwischen Autor und Erzähler trennen? Und ist die Haltung des Erzählers nun distanziert-ironisch oder fromm-naiv? Die vorliegende Arbeit liefert mittels aktueller narratologischer und rezeptionsästhetischer Analyseverfahren eine Typologie der primären Erzählerfigur von Ovids Epos. Zudem zeigt sie anhand detaillierter Textinterpretationen, wie inkonsistent Ovid seinen Erzähler konstruiert hat. Im Ergebnis wird die Neuartigkeit von Ovids Erzählanlage gegenüber tradierten Formen epischen Erzählens deutlich: Seine Erzählerfigur ist schillernder und präsenter, zudem oftmals keineswegs allwissend und objektiv – und vor allem fehlt ihr vielfach die eigentlich zukommende Zuverlässigkeit und Autorität.
