Die Arbeit untersucht anhand der mittelenglischen Romanzen die Etablierung des Englischen als Literatursprache im Spätmittelalter. Vor dem Hintergrund kontinentaler und insularer französischer Vorlagen prägt sich eine volkssprachliche Literaturgattung aus, die exemplarisch ist für den Verschriftlichungsschub, von dem das Englische ab dem 13. Jahrhundert erfasst wird. Zwei Fallanalysen zu den Romanzen Havelok the Dane und Ywain and Gawain und ihren jeweiligen Quellen widmen sich narratologischen, kulturhistorischen und poetologisch-rhetorischen Gesichtspunkten sowie Fragen der Formelhaftigkeit. Die Detailstudien liefern vertiefte Einblicke in mittelalterliche literarische Adaptionsprozesse und arbeiten das spezifische Gattungsprofil der mittelenglischen Romanzen heraus.
