Diese Dissertation nimmt die literarische Verarbeitung des Phänomens der Kriegsneurose in Rose Macaulays Non-Combatants and Others (1916), Dorothy L. Sayers' Whose Body? (1923), Rebecca Wests The Return of the Soldier (1918) und Virginia Woolfs Mrs. Dalloway (1923) als Ausgangspunkt. Die Verfasserin stellt die These auf, dass allen vier Romanen eine fundamentale Gesellschaftskritik zugrunde liegt, die einerseits durch die Thematik und andererseits durch die Veränderung der ästhetischen Mittel des Romans inszeniert wird: die gesellschaftlich bedingte Notwendigkeit, traditionelle Geschlechterrollen zugunsten der Androgynie abzulegen, sowie die literarisch-ästhetische Notwendigkeit der Anwendung modernistischer Stilmittel.
