In dieser Arbeit wird die Wartburg'sche Superstrat-Theorie unter Berücksichtigung moderner soziolinguistischer Kriterien neu entfaltet. Dabei soll die traditionell monokausale Argumentationsweise einer polykausalen weichen: Das fränkische Superstrat hat die Entstehung bestimmter lautlicher Innovationen im Sprechlatein Nordgalliens nicht allein bewirkt, sondern zusammen mit anderen Faktoren, wobei dem fränkischen Superstrat aber die Rolle des Motors zukommt. Das zweite Ziel ist, die Vielzahl der zwischen Langobardia/Ladinia und Francia bestehenden sprachlichen Parallelen zu erklären: Diese können über Sprachkontakt Frankoromanisch - Padanolateinisch entstanden sein, nachdem aufgrund der fränkischen Eroberung Oberitaliens-Ladiniens dort zur Francia analoge außersprachliche Bedingungen herrschten. Als Beispiel für alle drei Teilgebiete dient die Palatalisierung von [ka], [ga].
