Weltweit werden jährlich ca. 20 Millionen Schwangerschaftsabbrüche unsachgemäß und häufig illegal durchgeführt, trotz internationaler Bemühungen im Bereich Familienplanung. Um die Hintergründe dieser Problematik besser zu verstehen, wurden Tiefeninterviews mit 65 betroffenen kamerunischen Frauen durchgeführt und durch Daten, wie Krankengeschichten und Interviews mit medizinischem Personal, ergänzt. Anhand der individuellen Erfahrung von Frauen wird verständlich, wie es zur Entscheidung für den Schwangerschaftsabbruch kommt und wie sozio-kulturelle Faktoren das Verhalten von Jugendlichen im Vergleich zu verheirateten Frauen unterschiedlich bestimmen. Die Reaktion des sozialen Umfeldes und die öffentliche Schande stehen hierbei den Frauen näher als der Staat in Form von Polizei und Gericht.
