In byzantinischen Heiligenviten trifft man immer wieder auf dieselben Motive, die zur Darstellung der oder des jeweiligen Heiligen verwendet werden. In diesem Buch werden drei Viten, die besondere Motive enthalten, sowohl in ihrem individuellen Kontext untersucht als auch untereinander in Beziehung gesetzt. Dabei werden auch historische und andere Fragestellungen berücksichtigt, wie z.B. die byzantinischen Brautschauen. Für den literarhistorischen Aspekt bildet die spätantike Vita des Fabeldichters Äsop den Ausgangspunkt, die ebenfalls sonst nicht geläufige Elemente aufweist. Zwei weitere Kapitel sind dem Phänomen der Heiligen Narren und verschiedenen Aspekten des byzantinischen Mimus gewidmet. Diese beiden Themenkreise stehen mit der Anwendung der speziellen Motive in engem Zusammenhang.
