Fragen nach der geschichtlichen Grundlage einer mit Demokratie und Westbindung zu vereinbarenden deutschen Identität und nach Ursachen des ethnozentrischen, aggressiven Nationalismus prägen diese Studien. Sie untersuchen vor allem die Vorstellungen liberaler süddeutscher Kammerabgeordneter des Vormärz, vergleichen sie mit anderen nationalen Konzepten und erhellen ihren historischen Hintergrund. Gezeigt wird, daß das europaoffene westliche Nationalbewußtsein der 1830er Jahre schon seit etwa 1840 von einem machtorientierten integralen Nationalismus verdrängt wurde. Dieser Wandel wird unter anderem aus den Erschütterungen im Gefolge der einsetzenden Industrialisierung und ihrem Zusammentreffen mit einer inadäquaten politischen Struktur Deutschlands begründet.
