Die Kreuzlegenden bilden einen der wohl wichtigsten und umfassendsten Komplexe aller mittelalterlichen Legenden. Sie sind Ausdruck des teleologischen GeschichtsverstÃ¤ndnisses des Christentums, in dessen Zentrum das ErlÃ¶sungsopfer des Gottessohnes steht. Der Freskenzyklus Agnolo Gaddis in der Florentiner Franziskanerkirche S. Croce ist der Beginn einer Reihe zyklischer BilderzÃ¤hlungen der Kreuzlegenden, die im 14. und 15. Jh. ein sehr beliebtes und offenbar aktuelles Thema darstellten. Es werden Beispiele in Volterra, Empoli und Montegiorgio vorgestellt. Einen HÃ¶hepunkt dieser Darstellungsreihe bildet der Heiligkreuzzyklus Piero della Francescas in Arezzo. Wie kaum eine andere Legende ist die Schilderung der Kreuzlegenden in der Lage, aktuelle zeitgeschichtliche Implikationen in die BilderzÃ¤hlung aufzunehmen und dazu Stellung zu beziehen. Themenkomplexe wie Kreuzzug, Mission und Aufforderung zur Pilgerfahrt finden in den Freskenbildern ihren Niederschlag.
