Es existieren kaum funktionsadäquate Ansätze ihrer Darstellung. Die Arbeit geht mit einer funktionalen Definition von den bisher allgemein akzeptierten Präsentativa c'est, il y a, voilà und voici aus und arbeitet deren vielfältiges Wirken in der Kommunikation heraus. Zugleich werden generell funktionsgleiche Gebilde erfaßt und durch eine Korpusanalyse aus dem Bereich des gesprochenen und geschriebenen Französisch in ihren Haupt- und Kontextfunktionen beschrieben.
