Angesichts einer neuerlichen und zum Teil recht unterschiedlichen Inanspruchnahme des Subsidiaritätsprinzips in der aktuellen Sozialpolitik weist der vorliegende Beitrag aus der katholischen Sozialethik einen Bedeutungswandel dieses Grundsatzes nach. Gebrauchte man Subsidiarität früher - auch und gerade in der katholischen Tradition - meist als hierarchisch-konservative Ordnungsmaxime, so wird sie heute immer öfter von sozialen Bewegungen für kollektivsolidarische Aktionen und Selbstorganisationen in Dienst genommen und hilft somit als «Prinzip von unten», demokratische Prozesse und Institutionen in der (Welt-) Gesellschaft zu begründen und auszuweiten.
