Der Terminus 'Niederländische Literatur' als Gesamtbegriff für die literarische Produktion sowohl der Niederlande als auch des niederländischsprachigen Teils Belgiens (Flandern) ist auch in akademischen Kreisen noch nicht sehr weit vorgedrungen. Während seiner Gastprofessur an der Universität-Gesamthoch- schule-Duisburg im Sommersemester 1988 widmete Prof. Dr. M. Janssens der Universität Löwen seine Veranstaltungen vor allem der Bekanntmachung der niederländischen Literatur in der Bundesrepublik. Wichtige Autoren des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts (etwa Multatuli, Timmermans, Boon, Mulisch, Claus) werden in den hier gesammelten Beiträgen behandelt. Sie werden außerdem von Aufsätzen anderer Autoren aus den Niederlanden, der BRD, Belgien und Polen ergänzt.
