Die Metapher «Stummland» von Jiřà Grusa basiert auf der Ãœbersetzung des Wortes «NÄ›mecko», der tschechischen Bedeutung von «Deutschland». Im vorliegenden Buch werden die zwischen diesen zwei Kulturen situierten Exilwerke Libuse MonÃkovás (1945-1998), Jiřà Grusas (*1938) und Ota Filips (*1930) betrachtet - Autoren, die nach dem «Prager Frühling» die Tschechoslowakei verließen und im deutschen Exil mit dem Verfassen deutschsprachiger Prosa bzw. Lyrik begannen. Wie das Exil als ein in höchstem Maße unfreiwilliger Wechsel von einer kulturellen Umgebung in eine andere narrativiert wird, ist eine kardinale, immer wieder zur Sprache gebrachte Frage der Literaturwissenschaft. Unter dem Blickwinkel des Exildaseins werden mögliche Zugriffe auf den Identitätsbegriff problematisiert, um daran anknüpfend die als konstitutiv für den Identitätserhalt im Exil fungierenden Faktoren Heimat und Sprache zu beschreiben.
