Teilzeitbeschäftigung im öffentlichen Dienst wird auf Grundlage der Personalstatistik, der Beschäftigtenstatistik und des Mikrozensus zwischen 1950 und 1997 in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland analysiert. Die wachsende Bedeutung dieser Beschäftigungsform beruht auf ökonomischen, rechtlichen, politischen und sozialen Einflußfaktoren. In der öffentlichen Verwaltung führte die Beachtung der hergebrachten Grundsätze des Berufsbeamtentums zu einer besonderen Entwicklung der Teilzeitarbeit. Im Vergleich der Wirtschaftssektoren wird die Vorreiterrolle des öffentlichen Dienstes bei der Entwicklung von Teilzeitbeschäftigung deutlich. Vor allem im Bildungswesen sind Teilzeitarbeitsverhältnisse überproportional zu finden. Im internationalen Vergleich zeigen sich ähnliche Strukturmerkmale der Teilzeitbeschäftigung im öffentlichen Sektor.
