Anhand von literarischen Quellen - Caesar, Sallust, Diodor und Strabon - wird der Versuch antiker Autoren aufgedeckt, mit Hilfe meist topischer Äußerungen zum Erscheinungsbild - Physis und Tracht - von Fremdvölkern deren «Wesen» zu vermitteln. In der Quellenanalyse wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie die einzelnen Schriftsteller in ihren historiographischen und geographischen Werken «fremde Völker» darstellten und beurteilten bzw. ihre «Fremdheit» zu erklären versuchten. Die Untersuchung zeigt, daß das Phänomen der Vereinfachung und ethnischen Typisierung mutatis mutandis überall und zu jeder Zeit angetroffen werden kann.
