This book outlines the potential role of nitric oxide in the physiology and pathophysiology of the microcirculation with special emphasis on leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions. The chemistry of nitric oxide as it pertains to the vasculature is summarized. Among other aspects, the very controversial area of nitric oxide and ischemia/reperfusion is dealt with, followed by a chapter on a new therapeutic approach to using nitric oxide in the leukocyte-dependent ulceration associated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. This chapter summarizes data on the development of a novel series of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs modified to incorporate a nitric oxide-releasing moiety with reduced gastrointestinal toxicity. This is the most up-to-date book on the role of nitric oxide and leukocyte/platelet biology.
