Am Anfang der Berliner Physiologie stand K. A. Rudolphi, der 1810 an der von Friedrich Wilhelm 1. errichteten Berliner Universitat den ersten anatomisch-physiologischen Lehrstuhl ubernahm. Ihm folgte 1830 der Mediziner, Anatom und Biologe Johannes Muller, mit dem die Physiologie in Berlin einen ersten Hohepunkt erreichte. Zu den Verdiensten dieses bedeutenden Gelehrten gehoren nicht nur seine zahlreichen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten und die Herausgabe seines ""Handbuch der Physiologie"", sondern, von heute aus gesehen, seine Fahigkeit, hervorragende Nachwuchswissenschaftler an sich zu ziehen und sie fUr die naturwissenschaftliche Medizin zu begeistern. Zu diesen gehorten u. a. die Morphologen J. Henle, Th. Schwann und R. Virchow, der Zoologe E. Haeckel, die spateren Physiologen H. L. F. von Helmholtz, E. W. von Brucke und besonders ein junger Assistent, Emil du Bois-Reymond (1818-1896). Diesem hatte MUl- ler bereits 1853 ein eigenes physiologisches Laboratorium eingerich- tet und ihn auf das Gebiet der Elektrophysiologie aufmerksam ge- macht, das durch die Arbeiten von C. Matteucci wichtige Impulse er- fahren hatte. Elektrische Phanomene an Nerv und Muskel waren das Gebiet, dem sich du Bois-Reymond von da an zuwandte und das er mit gro8er Intensitat bis an sein Lebensende bearbeitete. 1848 bis 1860 erschien sein mehrbandiges Werk ""Uber die thierische Elektri- zitat"" .
