Vilfredo Paretos allgemeine Soziologie kann als Transformation philosophischer Standpunkte in eine soziologische Handlungs- und Ordnungstheorie verstanden werden. Zum einen stellt sich seine Handlungstheorie als materiale Transformation seines philosophischen Positivismus dar, enthält dabei aber eine verstehende Komponente. Formal bestimmt ist seine Handlungs- und Ordnungstheorie hingegen durch einen dialektischen Essentialismus, der mit den positivistischen Theorieanteilen in ein Spannungsverhältnis gerät. Vor diesem Hintergrund rekonstruiert Gert Albert den wirkungsgeschichtlich unterschätzten Ansatz Paretos. Er behandelt dabei drei zentrale Aspekte dieser Theoriekonzeption: Philosophie und Wissenschaftstheorie, Handlungstheorie und Rationalitätskonzeption, Ordnungs- bzw. Elitetheorie. Die Rekonstruktion der Handlungstheorie bietet eine Zusammenschau der bisher nur separat behandelten Teile; die demokratiekritische Stoßrichtung der Elitetheorie wird auf ihre positivistisch-essentialistische Grundlage zurückgeführt.
