Medienöffentlichkeit ist das zentrale Forum für die kommunikative Auseinandersetzung mit gesellschaftlichen Problemen in modernen Gesellschaften. In diesem Forum konkurrieren Sprecher vor den Augen und Ohren des Publikums um die Durchsetzung ihrer je spezifischen Problemdeutungen. Konditioniert ist dieser Prozeß durch die Selektions- und Konstruktionsleistungen der Massenmedien. Der Autor entwickelt ein deutungs- und prozeßorientiertes Modell von Medienöffentlichkeit, das er mit Hilfe einer Fallstudie zur drogenpolitischen Berichterstattung bundesdeutscher Printmedien in den Jahren 1988 bis 1995 untermauert. Neben empirisch-analytischen Erkenntnissen über öffentliche Deutungsprozesse leitet er aus diesem Modell auch Kriterien für die normative Bewertung medienvermittelter öffentlicher Kommunikation ab.
