| book description |
Federalism became the guiding principle in the Habsburg monarchy of the 19th century. Revolutions, crises and social change acted as catalysts. Conservative, liberal, nationalist and socialist idea generators wrestled around this question how the diversity of peoples and spaces should be ordered. A laboratory of federal ideas was created, the history of which extends from Metternich's 'federal state' in Vormarz to Kaiser Karl's federal state of nationalities in 1918. The book tells the current story of what kept the empire together and why it fell apart.
