Die Studie untersucht die Praktiken und Vorstellungen gelehrter und politischer Kommunikation in der ersten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts. Ausgangspunkt sind die Planungen für ein interkonfessionelles Religionsgespräch im polnischen Thorn im Jahr 1645, das ""Colloquium Charitativum"". Das Ereignis und die sich daran anschließenden Diskussionen zeigen die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen einer ""Irenik"", die in das eigentlich Konsens fordernde interkonfessionelle Kommunikationsgefüge eingebunden war. Der Streit um die ""Irenik"" erforderte von allen Parteien Rückgriffe auf ""polemische"" Verhaltensmuster, um in den unterschiedlichen Öffentlichkeiten Geltung für die eigenen Positionen einzuklagen. Nur in Ansätzen konnten sich die Vorstellungen der ""Ireniker"" durchsetzen. Sie dienten allerdings in der beginnenden Aufklärung als Folien, mit Hilfe derer eine Kommunikationsreform umgesetzt werden konnte.
