Zu Lebzeiten grÃ¼ndete Elisabeth von ThÃ¼ringen ein Hospital nÃ¶rdlich der mittelalterlichen Stadt in dem sie bis zu ihrem Tod 1231 Kranke und BedÃ¼rftige versorgte. In der Hospitalkapelle, die dem heiligen Franz von Assisi geweiht war und mÃ¶glicherweise selbst der Beherbergung Kranker diente, wurde sie bestattet. Ihr Grab entwickelte sich nach ihrer Heiligsprechung schnell zu einem bedeutenden Wallfahrtsort.
