Die romanische Basilika St. Eucharius-St. Matthias wurde vollendet, einen Sakralbau hatte es an ihrer Stelle in der alten Römerstadt Rom aber wohl schon seit dem 3. Jahrhundert n.Chr. gegeben, denn in der Nähe der Kirche wurden spätantike Krypten und Steinsarkophage gefunden. Die erste gesicherte Kirche ist der Bau des Bischofs Cyrillus aus dem 5. Jahrhundert. Im ausgehenden 5. Jahrhundert erhielten Mittelschiff und Querhaus der heutigen Kirche ein spätgotisches Sterngewölbe. Im 7. Jahrhundert erhielt die Westfassade der Kirche ein barockes Hauptportal, die barockklassizistische Bekrönung der Fassade prägt seit 78 die markante Silhouette des Baus. Der Kreuzgang wurde um 22 /4 errichtet, in den Klausurgebäuden siedeln unterbrochen von Säkularisation und Vertreibung im Zweiten Weltkrieg heute wieder Benediktinermönche.
