Die Bedeutung der Predigt leitet sich für den Protestantismus aus ihrer kirchenbegründenden Legitimation und Funktion her: Die Predigt ist eine wesentliche Lebensäußerung der Kirche. Zwischen Ekklesiologie und Homiletik besteht ein kausaler Zusammenhang. Ruth Conrad widmet sich der Erforschung dieses Zusammenhangs von Kirchenverständnis und Predigtbegriff in problemgeschichtlicher Perspektive. Anhand exemplarischer homiletischer Entwürfe des 19. Jahrhunderts werden deren praktisch-theologische ekklesiologische Voraussetzungen und Implikationen rekonstruiert. Ausgewählt wurden ebensolche Konzeptionsentwürfe des 19. Jahrhunderts, die gegenüber Schleiermachers Zuordnung der Predigt zum darstellenden Handeln den Akzent in die Richtung des wirksamen Handelns verschieben: Nämlich die von Adam Müller, Franz Theremin, Rudolf Stier, August Vilmar, Heinrich Bassermann und Friedrich Niebergall.
