Das 1567 erschienene Gebetbuch Johann Habermanns war bis nach dem ersten Weltkrieg das meistgelesene und in viele Sprachen übersetzte evangelische Gebetbuch. Das Interesse daran brach dann plötzlich ab, weil es im Ruf stand, nur ein Plagiat einer jesuitischen Schrift zu sein. Traugott Koch widerlegt dieses Vorurteil mit der vorliegenden Studie. Er legt dar, daß bereits das Mittelalter die Bemühung kennt, den Laien und Nichtgelehrten das Beten als den Vollzug des Christseins nahe zu bringen. Sodann erörtert er ausführlich Luthers reformatorisches Verständnis des Gebets und ordnet diesem Verständnis das Gebetbuch Habermanns zu. Um dessen genuin lutherischen Charakter aufzuweisen, untersucht und interpretiert Traugott Koch das gesamte Werk Habermanns und insbesondere seine Predigtbände oder 'Postillen'.
