Ausgangspunkt der Studie ist die religiöse Erfahrung. Die Autorin nähert sich dem Phänomen durch einen qualitativen Forschungsansatz, bei dem die religiösen Erfahrungen von jungen, urbanen Menschen aus Europa und den USA empirisch untersucht werden. Es wird deutlich, dass Individuen selbst konstruktive Akteur*innen von Theologie sind. Dabei manifestiert sich religiöse Erfahrung als transformative Hoffnungsperspektive im Leben der jungen Menschen. Die Studie endet mit einem auf befreiungstheologische und feministische Theorien abgestützten Plädoyer für eine Theologie von unten, bei der die kontextuellen Perspektiven zentral für die praktisch-theologische Theoriebildung sind.
