El objetivo del estudio es la determinación de un núcleo mínimo de fenómenos pertenecientes a una norma lingüística regional del castellano de Cataluña. El estudio realizado desde una perspectiva variacional opera sobre la base de un corpus de unas 70 horas de entrevistas. Los 40 informantes entrevistados en Madrid y en Barcelona son considerados como multiplicadores de usos lingüísticos por su dedicación labora relacionada con la lengua castellana. Como factores determinantes del desarrollo de normas lingüísticas regionales, se analizan las frecuencias de uso y la aceptabilidad formal e informal de unos 80 fenómenos léxicos, morfosintácticos y pragmáticos presuntamente característicos del castellano de Cataluña. La comparación de los datos cualitativos y cuantitativos permite la determinación de diferencias entre las variedades, así como también de la existencia de la supuesta norma regional. Los datos permiten establecer una jerarquía de los fenómenos según el conocimiento, aceptabilidad, frecuencia, etc. y de ubicarlos en un continuum entre los polos conocido/no conocido, formalmente aceptable/formalmente no aceptable, frecuente/no frecuente, etc. Estos niveles son complementados por los datos acerca de las diferencias a nivel denotativo, connotativo y pragmático deducibles de las entrevistas. Los datos metalingüísticos facilitan, a su vez, la interpretación y explicación de los datos cuantitativos, permitiendo conclusiones acerca de las actitudes de los hablantes hacia diferentes variedades del castellano.
