Während die Mhd. Grammatik von Hermann Paul seit der 20. Auflage (1969) und die Frühneuhochdeutsche Grammatik (1993) – beide in der Reihe „Sammlung kurzer Grammatiken germanischer Dialekte“ publiziert – einen Syntaxteil enthalten, erschien in Ergänzung zur „Althochdeutschen Grammatik I“ erstmals 2004 ein Teil II „Syntax“ von Richard Schrodt, der stark theoretisch geprägt und weniger an einer strukturierten Dokumentation des Materials interessiert war. Die nun vorliegende Neufassung ist im Einklang mit der Zielrichtung der Reihe dagegen stärker materialbezogen. Die Grundstrukturen des Althochdeutschen werden materialbasiert dargestellt. – Die Darstellung beginnt bei den Kasusfunktionen, dokumentiert die elementaren Satzbaupläne auf der Grundlage der Valenzgrammatik. Es folgt eine strukturierte Darstellung des Aufbaus der Nominal- und Verbalphrase, der Satzarten, der Satzfelder (Satzklammer), der Para- und Hypotaxe, der verschiedenen Nebensatzarten und der Negation. Die syntaktischen Strukturen werden, soweit möglich, aus allen Quellengattungen des gesamten althochdeutschen Zeitraums (8. bis 11. Jahrhundert) unter Einschluss des Glossenmaterials belegt. Band I und Band II der Althochdeutschen Grammatik sind auch als Set erhältlich.
