Anders als in der Forschung bislang dargestellt, besteht zwischen den klassischen Grabbezirken und den seit der Zeit um 600 v. Chr. im Athener Kerameikos nachweisbaren freistehenden, quaderfï¿½rmigen Grabbauten aus Lehmziegeln ein kategorialer Unterschied. Die attischen Grabbauten besitzen eine eigene Tradition, die bis weit in die Kaiserzeit reicht. Im Laufe seiner langen Entwicklung hat der archaische, klassische, hellenistische und kaiserzeitliche Grabbau bestï¿½ndig neue Metamorphosen seiner blockartigen Grundform angenommen. Bereits vor dem Aufkommen grï¿½ï¿½erer Grabbezirke im Jahrzehnt 440/430 v. Chr. wurden im Kerameikos erste Anlagen errichtet, die den monumentalen Podiumscharakter des Grabbaus mit der neuen Konzeption eines ummauerten Grabbezirks zur Aufnahme von Mehrfachbestattungen verbanden. Im 4. Jh. v. Chr. wird die Tradition des archaischen Grabbaus vor allem im bescheideneren Format der sog. Grabtische (trapezai) fortgefï¿½hrt, deren Charakter als in Marmor umgesetzte Einzelgrabmï¿½ler nach architektonischem Vorbild evident ist. Sowohl in hellenistischer Zeit als auch unter rï¿½mischer Herrschaft erfï¿½hrt der Grabbau dann erneut eine Monumentalisierung in Gestalt der kaiserzeitlichen Stuckgrabbauten.
