Heinrich Friedrich von Diez (1751-1817) war alles in einem: Jurist, philosophischer Freigeist, preuÃŸischer Diplomat, ein auf grÃ¶ÃŸte Korrektheit bedachter streitbarer Gelehrter und ein engagierter Sammler von Handschriften, Drucken und MÃ¼nzen vor allem tÃ¼rkischer und persischer Provenienz. Von Friedrich dem GroÃŸen als GeschÃ¤ftstrÃ¤ger nach Konstantinopel entsandt und von Goethe als Kenner des Orients bei seinen Recherchen zum West-Ã¶stlichen Divan konsultiert, stand Diez auch mit anderen bedeutenden PersÃ¶nlichkeiten seiner Zeit im Briefwechsel, doch wurde bislang nur ein sehr geringer Teil seiner ebenso umfang- wie inhaltsreichen Korrespondenz verÃ¶ffentlicht. Zu seinen Briefpartnern zÃ¤hlten neben Johann Wolfgang Goethe und dem HalberstÃ¤dter Dichter Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim u. a. auch der Berliner Verleger und BuchhÃ¤ndler Friedrich Nicolai, der Orientalist und Bibliothekar Oluf Gerhard Tychsen, der Diplomat Christian Konrad Wilhelm Dohm sowie der eher libertinÃ¤re Philosoph und Mirabeau eng verbundene Staatswissenschaftler Jakob Mauvillon.
