Heinrich Friedrich von Diez (1751-1817) war alles in einem: Jurist, philosophischer Freigeist, preußischer Diplomat, ein auf größte Korrektheit bedachter streitbarer Gelehrter und ein engagierter Sammler von Handschriften, Drucken und Münzen vor allem türkischer und persischer Provenienz. Von Friedrich dem Großen als Geschäftsträger nach Konstantinopel entsandt und von Goethe als Kenner des Orients bei seinen Recherchen zum West-östlichen Divan konsultiert, stand Diez auch mit anderen bedeutenden Persönlichkeiten seiner Zeit im Briefwechsel, doch wurde bislang nur ein sehr geringer Teil seiner ebenso umfang- wie inhaltsreichen Korrespondenz veröffentlicht. Zu seinen Briefpartnern zählten neben Johann Wolfgang Goethe und dem Halberstädter Dichter Johann Wilhelm Ludwig Gleim u. a. auch der Berliner Verleger und Buchhändler Friedrich Nicolai, der Orientalist und Bibliothekar Oluf Gerhard Tychsen, der Diplomat Christian Konrad Wilhelm Dohm sowie der eher libertinäre Philosoph und Mirabeau eng verbundene Staatswissenschaftler Jakob Mauvillon.
