Literarische Utopien sind Medien einer spezifischen kulturellen Kommunikation. Ihre textuelle Organisation, die sie von anderen Gattungen unterscheidet, besteht in einer Mobilisierung von Bildern der satirisch beschriebenen Wirklichkeit und im Entwurf imaginärer Gegenbilder. Diese Gegenbilder sind narrativ und bildhaft zugleich. Sie beziehen sich implizit oder explizit kritisch auf die jeweilige gesellschaftliche Wirklichkeit, in der sie entstehen - ob als Wunsch- oder als Schreckbild. Von besonderer Bedeutung sind literarische Entwürfe im Vorwegnehmen von Zukunft und in der Gegenüberstellung von Wirklichem und Möglichem im Sinne des Möglichkeitsdenkens. Literarische Utopien erlauben fiktionales Probehandeln; deshalb sind ihre unterschiedlichen ästhetischen Ausprägungen zugleich der Ort ihrer Selbstreflexion.
