In einem ersten Abschnitt fokussiert das Buch die Zeit des Deutschen Bundes bis 1866, den preuisch-osterreichischen Dualismus und die Bedeutung der Einigungskriege bis 1870/71 fur Deutschland und Europa. Der zweite Abschnitt nimmt die damalige hessischen Staatenwelt in den Blick und beleuchtet die Konsequenzen, die die preuische Annexion des ehemaligen Herzogtums Nassau, des Kurfurstentums Hessen, der noch kurzzeitig an das Groherzogtum Hessen gefallenen Landgrafschaft Hessen-Homburg und der Freien Stadt Frankfurt hatte. Frankfurt schlielich, das die wohl tiefste Zasur unter den hessischen Staaten erfuhr, ist der dritte Abschnitt gewidmet.
