Die Gesundheitsökonomie hat sich in Deutschland als akademisches Lehr- und Forschungsgebiet etabliert. Inhalt und Methoden der Gesundheitsökonomie sind vielfältig. Die fachlichen Hintergründe liegen nach wie vor in der Sozialpolitik, in der Finanzwissenschaft, in der Ordnungspolitik, aber auch in der Versicherungswissenschaft, der Institutionenökonomie und der angewandten Mikroökonomie sowie neuerdings sogar in der Spieltheorie.
