Die Förderung junger Berliner Künstler nach 1945 durch die amerikanische Besatzungsmacht sind Gegenstand dieses Buches. Erstmalig werden hier umfassend die Aktivitäten der Prolog-Gruppe beschrieben, die 1946 gegründet wurde und deren Mitglieder prominente deutsche Kunsthistoriker, Kunstkritiker, Museumsmitarbeiter und Künstler sowie Mitarbeiter der amerikanischen Militärverwaltung waren. Zu ihren Aktivitäten gehörte die Organisation von Lesungen, Ausstellungen und die Herausgabe von hochwertigen Publikationen. Primäres Interesse war es, die junge Kunst aus Berlin international bekannt zu machen. Das Buch beschreibt neben den Aktivitäten auch die Kritik an Ausrichtung und Umsetzung dieser Vorhaben und erläutert schließlich auch die Gründe für eine Umorientierung auf die Klassische Moderne anstelle der zeitgenössischen Nachkriegskunst.
