Bereits in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren veröffentlichten zahlreiche Akteure des Zweiten Weltkriegs wehrwissenschaftliche Studien und Memoiren. Dabei interessierte vor allem die Frage, warum der Krieg nicht gewonnen werden konnte. Selbstzeugnisse der Generale reduzierten ihr Handeln auf eine Befehlskette, die sie selbst entlastete und die Deutschen insgesamt von jeder Verantwortung freisprach. Die in dem vorliegenden Band versammelten Aussagen hochrangiger Militärs stellen einen Quellenkorpus dar, der analog zu den in westlicher Internierung angefertigten Aufzeichnungen nicht frei von Widersprüchen oder Ungenauigkeiten ist. Auch hier findet sich das vorsätzliche Verschleiern von belastenden Sachverhalten. Allerdings sind sie frei vom Rechtfertigungsdiskurs der westdeutschen Nachkriegsöffentlichkeit, weil die Protagonisten von ihm ausgeschlossen waren.
