Aus dem verlorenen Lehrgedicht Über die Natur des vorsokratischen Philosophen Empedokles von Agrigent (um 450 v. Chr.) wird ein größerer Abschnitt des 1. Buches rekonstruiert und im griechischen Wortlaut sowie in deutscher Übersetzung vorgelegt. Hierzu werden die Textstücke des Straßburger Empedokles-Papyrus mit einer Zitatfolge kombiniert, die der spätantike Kommentator Simplikios demselben Abschnitt des Gedichts entnahm. So ergibt sich ein Gedankengang, der vom Nachweis der Prinzipien (vier Elemente, Liebe und Streit) zu einer ersten Skizze des Kosmischen Zyklus führt. Für die 2. Auflage wurde der Text überarbeitet und um ein einführendes Vorwort erweitert.
