L'ouvrage présente d'abord l'éthique de la libération du philosophe argentin, Enrique Dussel, et la situe dans le courant de la philosophie latino-américaine. Il en retrace ensuite les étapes de construction à travers son dialogue avec la tradition occidentale, en particulier Marx, Levinas, Rorty, Habermas, Ricoeur et Apel, mais également Kant et Heidegger. C'est le dialogue avorté avec Apel comme figure d'une éthique universaliste fondée sur la délibération qui constitue le tournant de la démarche. Dussel ressort de cet échange convaincu de la pertinence de son principe matériel nécessaire à la fondation d'une éthique qui résiste à l'exclusion des sans voix produite par le principe de raison universelle. L'éthique doit accepter son incomplétude matérielle de principe et renvoyer constamment à l'impossible communauté avec les victimes dont elle procède toujours. De cette manière, elle ouvre la voie à une politique de la justice, seule capable d'entreprendre le chemin commun auquel aspire l'éthique de la libération.
