Ce travail examine l'ethnographie suisse entre 1880 et 1950 sous le double angle de l'organisation de la recherche et des pratiques scientifiques. Il articule l'étude des conditions institutionnelles de possibilité de la recherche à celle de sa mise en oeuvre dans les enquêtes de terrain et le travail muséal. Il vise de ce fait d'une part à saisir les modalités de l'institutionnalisation et de la disciplinarisation; d'autre part, il souhaite en éclairer les effets sur la pratique de recherche et instruire les rapports réciproques entre le savant et le public. Adoptant le point de vue des acteurs, cet ouvrage dessine une micro-histoire des institutions et des pratiques de l'ethnographie et c'est aux plus significatifs de ces acteurs que son titre rend hommage. Fondateurs des institutions ethnographiques, les gentlemen défendent une science désintéressée et réservée à des cercles restreints. Les prolétaires, après que l'Etat investit et s'investit dans l'ethnographie, sont sensibles à sa diffusion et son usage: ils la professionnalisent, la disciplinarisent et, surtout, la popularisent. Les primitifs sont tout à la fois l'objet de l'ethnographie, et l'enjeu et l'arbitre du conflit entre ces deux conceptions de la science.
