| book description |

On 8th October 1919, six men met for lunch at Scott's Hotel in Melbourne. Their purpose was to discuss the possibility of forming a Scottish Society in Melbourne, the function of which would be to 'foster Scottish sentiment and to maintain Scottish tradition in this community'. The organisation which grew from that first meeting is known as The Melbourne Scots. In the early years of the society, members met socially for lunches, 'smoke nights' and dinners. Now, over one hundred years later, men and women of The Melbourne Scots gather together to mark the birthday of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns, and to commemorate Scotland's patron saint, St Andrew, and for a variety of other social functions. This second collection represents speeches given on these special occasions. Among the contributors are Sir Ninian Stephen, Professor Geoffrey Blainey, Sir Rohan Delacombe, Sir Andrew McKenzie and Heather Henderson. As with the first collection, published in 2007, it is hoped that this selection of speeches will also entertain, inform and keep alive the Goodly Heritage.
