| book description |
The Prison Speaks was first published in 2003 after the author was invited to Denmark (by the South Africa Contact/Anti-Apartheid Movement) where she was able to compare first world prison conditions with those in South Africa. The updated, second edition was published in 2017 where the author grapples with the fact that, 15 years after the publication of the first edition, the problems in the South African prison system remain unaddressed. This revised 2020 edition has been motivated by the appointment of a new Minister of Justice and Correctional Services as well as Judge Cameron as the new Inspecting Judge of Prisons. The book contains fresh prison and crime statistics and addresses the following topics: A brief history of prisons in South Africa; Statistics on crime and punishment; Overcrowding; The profile of a South African prisoner; Male rape; Human rights; The Number Gangs
