| book description |
The Mean Mother-in-Law’s Manual is mainly an experiential guide to legacy writing; writing your story after a traumatic event. The trauma can be major or it can be something quite insignificant that alters family dynamics. The text is packed with examples from real life to stimulate creativity and it includes the use of an interesting sub-text that takes the reader on a journey to India. The first chapters are expository, they are linked closely to legacy writing with tips on what to do, how to do it and pitfalls to look out for. The final chapters suggest ways of writing up the family history and getting your book published. It includes a section on the impact of apartheid on all South African families and encourages the writer to explore family history within this context. The last chapter tells the writer how to approach a publishing house versus the basics for self-publishing (including use of the computer for book formatting and setting); the author does not gloss over the difficulties of marketing a book. There is a self-publishing price guide as well. The message is: self-publishing is not impossible and it’s fun!
