| book description |

Gerhard Richter: The Overpainted Photographs is a landmark publication offering the most comprehensive account of this lesser-known aspect of Richter’s practice. The catalogue documents the artist’s overpainted photographs, a series he began making in the late 1980s and continues today. These works feature juxtaposing landscapes from across the globe, captured in photographs taken on the artist’s travels. Richter has then adapted these photographs by painting over the initial image, sometimes completely concealing it under layers of paint.  An essay by Hans Ulrich Obrist — Artistic Director of Serpentine Galleries, London—introduces the works, detailing the processes the artist adopts in their production. This is followed by an essay by renowned art critic and curator Robert Storr, who explores the mediums of painting and photography, and their intersection, further. Other contributors include Achim Borchardt-Hume, Dorothée Brill, Stefan Gronert, Aline Guillermet, Joe Hage, Siri Hustvedt, Christine Mehring, Paul Moorhouse, Uwe M. Schneede, Botho Strauss. Presented in six volumes, housed in an elegant slipcase.
