N.C. Wyeth: Catalogue Raisonne

By (author) Christine Bauer Podmaniczky, By (author) Joyce Hill Stoner

| book description |

The Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania is renowned for its collection of art by three generations of the influential Wyeth family. The patriarch of that famous clan - and one of America's foremost illustrators and painters - is the subject of this extensively researched catalogue raisonne by the Museum, which features over 2,000 illustrated works. N.C. Wyeth moved to the picturesque Brandywine Valley in 1902 to study with artist Howard Pyle. There, he raised a family, and within a decade established himself among America's prominent illustrators, with work featured in magazines, newspapers and in numerous popular books. Several of his most famous illustrations were for classic novels published by Scribner's: Treasure Island , Kidnapped , The Black Arrow , The Boy's King Arthur , and The Last of the Mohicans .Wyeth also painted fine still lifes, landscape paintings, and portraits in a fascinating variety of styles and techniques. N.C. Wyeth's children inherited much of his talent. Daughters Henriette Wyeth Hurd and Carolyn Wyeth gained recognition as painters, and Andrew Wyeth, his youngest son, has become one of the best-known painters in the history of American art. Andrew Wyeth's younger son is painter James Wyeth. Researched, compiled, and written by Christine Bauer Podmaniczky, with an essay by conservator Joyce Hill Stoner, this publication is an invaluable contribution to scholarship and a stunning visual chronicle of N.C. Wyeth's achievement.
