| book description |

This book probes the different dimensions of Caribbean intellectual history and examines some contemporary aspects of Caribbean society. The diverse essays range from an examination of the 1805 Haitian constitution and its multiple meanings to a discussion of violence in contemporary Jamaican society. The book engages in an extensive discussion of C.L.R. James' Black Jacobins as a founding text of radical Caribbean historical thinking and historiography. Taking into consideration both the literary and political forms of the Black Jacobins, Bogues discusses the relationship between political thought, history, and literature in Caribbean intellectual history. The segment ends with an essay on the ways in which historical memory functions in the construction of public history in post-colonial countries.
